Cincinnati, OH (Sports Network) - The Pittsburgh Pirates on Friday selected the contract of reliever Joe Beimel from Triple-A Indianapolis. Beimel, who turns 34 next week, joined the Pirates in spring training as a non-roster invitee and began the season with Bradenton in the Florida State League due to left elbow inflammation. He made one appearance with Bradenton and worked two scoreless outings with Indianapolis. Beimel began his career in Pittsburgh in 2001 and has since played for five other clubs. He appeared in 71 games out of the Rockies' bullpen last season and compiled a 3.40 earned run average over 45 innings. The situational lefty has seen action in 532 games during his tenure in the majors. He has started 23 games and owns a 23-31 record with four saves, 88 holds and a 4.16 ERA. To make room for Beimel, the Pirates designated pitcher Garrett Olson for assignment. Pittsburgh claimed the left-hander off waivers from Seattle last month. Olson was 1-1 with a 2.08 ERA in four appearances this season.
