There was nothing difficult about finding or purchasing gift cards at stores in midtown Manhattan in the past few days.

Every now and then it seems that luxury designers lose focus and attempt to venture into new design territory. My advice to them is: Stop it! Stick with what you know best. This bag is a prime example of when good design goes horribly wrong.

DONNA'S BIG EVENTS: So much for a laid-back week at the end of July. Donna Karan underwrote and was co-host, along with In Style magazine, of Super Saturday 8, the giant charity sample sale at Nova's Ark Project in Water Mill, N.Y. The annual shopfest raised a record $2 million for the Ovarian Cancer Research Fund. About 2,500 paid $400 apiece to forage through 215 booths selling designer clothes, accessories, home goods and beauty products for women, men and kids. Although prices ranged from $10 keychains to half-price Dyson vacuum cleaners to furs, stacks of bags and furniture running into the thousands, shoppers went wild for the freebie at the end. Goody bags 2,300 of them weighed about five pounds each and held such lovely parting gifts as cookbooks, CD's and yet-to-be-released skin cream.But Super Saturday followed Super Tuesday, at least for Karan and her family. On July 26, her daughter, Gabby Karan de Felice, gave birth to 7-pound, 14-ounce Sebastiano at Lennox Hill Hospital in Manhattan. It is de Felice's second child with husband Gianpaolo de Felice. Big sister Stefania is two. By the weekend, the whole clan was out relaxing in East Hampton, and Stefania attended Super Saturday with her grandma. The pair sat to design their own mini handbag, Stefania got a few tattoos and both enjoyed the rides.
