Remember our blog post a couple weeks ago on Marcela Calvet's latest collection? Well we've got an exclusive interview with the designer herself! Marcela tells us about her latest collection and life as a handbag designer.Handbago: You have such a wide assortment of bags in your collection. Tell us about what made you decide to build your own handbag business. When and how did Marcela Calvet handbags come to be?Marcela: If we speak in terms of my French heritage, it is easy to understand that fashion is in my blood. It started back in 1937 when the House of Calvet in Paris, acquired the iconic haute couture label Callot Soeurs. With all this history behind me, launching my own label came naturally to me. I had been designing handbags from an early age. In time, I came to the realisation that I needed to bring the Calvet name back to the forefront of fashion. This is how Marcela Calvet, the brand was born. The only difference is that instead of couture ensembles, the new label would be known primarily for its stunning handbags.What inspires your work? What is the inspiration for each collection?I am always inspired by beauty in all its forms: be it a painting, a song, a child’s smile, a city, nature, love, life. Beauty in general inspires me to create. Beauty in fashion is exemplified by those stylish women and men who embody a sense of chic, sophistication and self-confidence. My collections reflect this; that is why our handbags are named after those women who arethe personification of elegance, glamour and intelligence.Your bags are quite elegant and you have an exquisite level of taste. Where do you think that comes from?It probably comes from centuries ago. I do believe that good taste is inherited. So many women with impeccable taste in my family, going all the way back to 14th Century France. For me, the key element to what we call luxury chic” or “raffinement” is understated elegance.Do your travels play a significant role in your designs?Absolutely. When I travel I get to observe the people who inhabit thoseplaces, their customs, their culture and their way of life. That is so enrichingand inspiring! Nature also plays such a significant role in my designs, manyof the names we create for our signature colours are representative of this.Did you always want to be a designer?I believe one is born a designer. I had many other interests as well, and Ichose to pursue several of them; but designing is my passion.What advice do you have for aspiring handbag designers looking to break into the business?To persevere while remembering that success is measured not by yourachievements but by your failures. To stay true to yourself for you are creating something of beauty to be enjoyed by yourself and by those who can appreciate your art.Is there anything else about yourself or Marcela Calvet handbags that you would like our readers to know?Gabrielle “Coco” Chanel and my grandmother Marie were good acquaintances; that is why my nickname is Coqui, a variation of Coco. Our handbags are created for the woman of today. They are stylish, elegant, functional and comfortable. Our label continues to gain recognition not only for the stunning designs we bring to life but for the high level of artisanship that they reflect. Quality is paramount at Marcela Calvet. That is our heritage and our commitment.
