Local graphic designer Bob Chester competes to design helmet for Olympic skier Lindsey Vonn (Oct 10, 2011)
KSDK -- A St. Louis man isn't competing for Olympic gold, but a design for his helmet might be. Downhill skier Lindsey Vonn may help a local graphic designer into Olympic history. A childhood habit landed Bob Chester in the hotseat more than once. Years later, he turned his desire to doodle into a career as a graphic designer. "I just love to draw all the time," Chester said. But he was surfing, not sketching, when he discovered a unique opportunity: a contest to design the art work that would decorate Olympic skier Lindsey Vonn's helmet. "I thought wouldn't that be cool to design a helmet that Lindsey Vonn would wear in the Olympics, that would be fantastic," Chester said. First Chester had to figure out who Vonn was. "I really didn't know Lindsey that well obviously, because I didn't follow Olympic skiing that closely. But I'm a big fan of the Olympics and I researched her website," he said. Vonn is one of the most accomplished downhill skiers, but to come up with a design for Vonn's helmet, Chester went back to his sketch pad. "She had this long flowing blonde hair and I thought that'd be interesting to mirror that on a helmet," he said. Chester transformed his rough draft into high tech art. "I wanted something almost organic and energetic and contemporary and just different," Chester said. The gold color palate suggests Vonn will be the fastest down the mountain. And if she chooses Bob Chester's design, St. Louis can claim a little slice of gold. A decision is expected Thursday. Opening ceremonies for the Olympics are February 12.
