This collaboration really was about our girl stepping out of her normal comfort zone and hitting the road. The collection is called Westward by Emily and Meritt for Kate Spade New York and it launches in August, just in time for the Fall shows and season!?We love the western vibe of this suede and ostrich satchel, which is just one of six bags in the collection.

Philadelphia native, Nikki Henry, started her first handbag collection in 2007. Her styles are casual, yet chic and can be worn from season to season. Handbago caught up with the creative force behind NKHenryand asked her about her life as a handbag designer.Handbago: You have such a wide assortment of bags in your collection. Tell us about what made you decide to build your own handbag business. When and how did NKHenry come to be?Nikki: NKHenry started from a light bulb moment, literally after seeing some Kate Spade products on a trip to the mall one day. So I officially started with 3 bags in 2007 as my sort of "feeler" to test if I could build this into a viable business based on a clean, minimalist style. So this is how the brand began, naturally it's continuing to evolve into much more.What inspires your work?I'm inspired by rich leather and suedes, I love the smell when I enter a leather supplier! I love the relaxed European casual cool style- denim jackets, long flowing scarves, boy-cut trousers. I seek to make accessories that complement that look.What sets you apart from other handbag designers?What sets me apart is that I'm not following trends, I do the exact opposite. Another thing is that I stay away from seasonal collections. We add new silhouettes periodically which will remain part of the NKHenry brand, simply changing fabrics, colors, etc from season to season. This lends to our mission to promote classic, timeless pieces.Your bags are so effortlessly chic. What did you think was missing in today's handbags?What's missing is the effortless part. Everything looks so overdone- too many bells and whistles- hardware, zips here zips there. It looks cool and has its place, but everybody is doing the same thing, be unique. In a weird kind of way NKHenry is unique because it's simple.The Perfecto Bag is my favorite! How did you come up with the idea for it?Mine too! Well, it has a similar silhouette to my other bags, I just wanted to make it with more of a slouchy look than the others and more of an everyday sort of tote in tons of colors so women would want to collect them all. We're working on the latter part so look for the Perfecto in more colors and retail locations in 2010!What advice do you have for aspiring handbag designers looking to break into the business?If it's what you love, just do it!
