There's No Place Quite Like New York City (Sep 18, 2011)
Ever since my first visit at the age of eleven, I knew I wanted to live in New York. It was such a deviation from life in squeaky-clean West Los Angeles. The blaring noise of taxi cabs, the hodge podge of cultures and lifestyles, the non-stop chaos of the city--I loved it all, and I wanted to be a part of it. A few months ago, I decided to leave the comfortable cacoon I spent my entire life making in California and move to NYC with the hope that I would someday be able to sustain a life of my own. Finally, after what seemed like a lifetime (but was really just five months), I made the big move, not immediately to my dream studio apartment in New York City, but to my aunt's house in a small New Jersey town, perhaps at least a half hour commute via the New Jersey transit to Manhattan. It's not exactly what I had in mind, but it will have to do. It's not a bad situation considering the circumstances: I'm twenty-three years old, unemployed with a limited amount of money to live on until I find a job, and my relatives are allowing me to live rent-free in their spacious basement studio. I'm actually extremely lucky. Still, I can't help but feel a sense of longing whenever we drive down the expressway and I see the New York skyline in the distance. So close, yet so far.I can't begin to describe my excitement when I was finally able to visit the city yesterday for the first time since my arrival to the East Coast. It was as exhilarating as I remembered it, but now I was old enough to recognize an aspect of The Big Apple that my eleven-year-old self had not bothered to notice: the fashion. Don't get me wrong, I did not move 3000 miles to gawk at the Saks Fifth Avenue display window or blow my entire savings on a pair of designer heels, but I can't deny my attraction to great craftsmanship, sumptuous color palettes, and intricate, one-of-a-kind designs. I found myself doing double takes as I passed the gorgeous handbags perched in a window of Salvatore Ferragamo, and pausing to glance at the genius designs of Chanel on 5th Avenue. What can I say? Shoes have never been my thing; I've always been a handbag gal. As luck would have it, I strolled past Bryant Park to see that it was just beginning to undergo the white-tent, red carpet transformation for Fashion Week 2009. I can only imagine the amount of glamour and the immense celebrity presence expected to grace this arena within the days to come.Later that day, as I maneuvered my way further down 5th Avenue, I noticed a large crowd gathered outside of Bergdorf Goodman. Curious, I inched my way into the crowd and stood on my tiptoes to see what I could of what was causing a virtual New York traffic meltdown. Ladders, trailers, and huge lights--it had to be an on-location set for a movie. I asked the woman in front of me if she knew what was being filmed, and she said with a voice just shy of a squeal, "They're filming Sex and the City 2! They say the actresses are going to come out to do a scene on the sidewalk!"No. Way.Now, I don't consider myself a SatC fanatic, but I truly enjoy that show, and no one can deny the major influence the stars of SatC have on fashion. Everything they wear seems to appear in magazines and knock-off boutiques all over the country! I definitely had to try to catch a glimpse. After nearly fifteen minutes of waiting, the tired crowd suddenly came to life as Sarah Jessica Parker and Kristin Davis--Carrie Bradshaw and Charlotte York, in the flesh!--emerged from the front door of Bergdorf Goodman. They were dressed head to toe in designer labels: Halston, Christian Louboutin, and they were carrying, of course, Chanel and Dior handbags. Sarah Jessica Parker's stunning gold metal Chanel clutch was the perfect accessory to dress up her character's plain white dress, and Kristin Davis' Dior Python Rouge bag matched accordingly (in true Charlotte fashion) with her pinkest of pink ensembles. People snapped photos as the pair walked up and down the street, exchanging faux conversation for the scene. End scene. The crowd surges as the actresses wave from across the street. I stood there in awe, not because of their outfits or their celebrity, but because I knew that encounters like this could only happen in New York City. The city was alive with a magical commotion, and I became filled with an intense wave of determination: I will find a way to live in this town, no matter what it takes.

Okay, as you can probably already tell, I'm actually a 'big ol' handbag carrying kinda gal', but this hot little Badgley Mischka Platinum Label Studded Mini Leather Hobo has temporarly boggled my mind! This adorable leather bag (btw...the name is larger than the bag!) carries with a single handle and a detachable crossbody strap, and features rounded, goldtone studs. Measuring 11x5x2 1/2, it's available in black and red and sells for $245 at Saks. For the life of me I don't know how practical this bag would be for me, but it's going on my list of must have bags.
