It is believed that the first wedding favor, common amongst European aristocrats, was known as a bonbonniere - a small trinket box of crystal, porcelain and precious stones (Jan 01, 1970)
The tradition of distributing such gifts, also called wedding favors, is not a recent phenomenon but can be traced back centuries. It is believed that the first wedding favor, common amongst European aristocrats, was known as a bonbonniere - a small trinket box of crystal, porcelain and precious stones. It usually contained sugar cubes (a rare item in those times) or delicate confections, representing wealth and royalty. As sugar became cheaper and more available , so did the tradition of wedding reception gifts. With sugar losing its exclusivity, bonbonnieres were replaced with almonds to signify good wishes for the bridegrooms new life.

How To Shop For Vintage Jewelry At Thrift Shops (Sep 18, 2011)
Some of the best places to find great vintage costume jewelry are thrift shops. Youve seen the big stores Goodwill, Salvation Army, Saversand then there are the charity shops run by churches and non-profits. All of them receive donated jewelry, and I have found some amazing pieces in thrift shops. It seems to me that the larger chain shops have better prices than the smaller charity shops, but it really depends on who is pricing the jewelry when they put it out for sale. Some shop employees are very savvy about values, but some arent and they often price jewelry very low. Maybe they figure that if it isnt real gold it isnt worth much. Good for us!Thrift shop shopping has lost the stigma of being just junk shops or places where the down-and-out shop. A great tip is to become friendly with the staff of the shops that you visit. One clerk lets me rummage through the jewelry bins before she prices them and puts them out on the floor. Another lets me know when they get a large amount of jewelry donated.Find out when the shop has their specials. One store in my town has a 30% Senior discount on Wednesdays. Guess which day is my shopping day!Sometimes the shop management will put a large amount of jewelry in a plastic bag and sell the bag for a fixed price. If you find these, examine the bag as closely as you can you wont be allowed to open it, and theres lots of junk in there, mostly stuff that didnt sell, and often lots of plastic Mardi Gras beads. I bought these bags a few times, and it was fun sorting through everything, but I wound up donating most of it to a nursing home for crafts projects. I have found a few really nice pieces this way, but I dont think it was really worth the time and trouble. Most thrift shops have a glass case where they keep the better stuff. Ask to see pieces that interest you, and examine them closely. Look closely at the racks where they usually hang the cheaper stuff. I found a sterling silver Native American belt buckle, with a turquoise stone in itand signed by the artist, hanging in a zip lock bag on a rack. I bought it for $2.80 and sold it on eBay for $52! It was badly tarnished, but I polished it up and it was beautiful. There always seem to be lots of watches in those cases. Beware of copies of famous makes, and buy only name brands that you recognize. Make sure the band is in good condition and that there are no scratches on the crystal. The watch probably wont be working, so plan to spend $5 to $7 for a battery. If youre buying for resale, be sure to include the cost of a battery to see if the watch is worth buying. Youre taking a chance there it might not work even after a new battery is installed.Whether you are buying jewelry for your own collection or for resale, there are several things to look for when examining thrift shop jewelry.1. Condition, condition, condition: You are going to come across all kinds of jewelry in all kinds of condition. Look for broken clasps, missing stones, worn metal finishes, and any green material on gold tone jewelry. The green stuff is corrosion, and it cant be cleaned off. Pass on that one. Check that stone settings are tight, and if they arent, be careful with the piece you should be able to tighten them. If the piece is dirty you can clean it. Bring a jewelers loupe or strong magnifying glass so you can examine the piece closely. 2. Is the piece signed? The name on the back of a pin or earring, on the clasp of a necklace or bracelet, or on an earring clip is the signature of the designer. Signed pieces can be more valuable than unsigned, but there are also many many unsigned beauties out there. Look for the name, and if there is a copyright symbol , that means the piece was made after about 1955. No symbol you probably have a real vintage piece. Look for the numbers 925 on silver jewelry that means its sterling silver, and if the price is right, youve got a steal.3. Price: Its hard to put a price on thrift shop jewelry the cheaper, the better, of course! I try not to spend more than $3 for a pin, bracelet, necklace or pair of earrings. You might come across something really spectacular that costs more, and if you think you can profit from it, or you want it for yourself, go ahead and buy it. A good rule of thumb when shopping thrift shops is this: If you like it but arent sure, set yourself a limit, say $5. If it turns out to be not so great, youre not out that much. As mentioned, some thrift shop employees know more about jewelry, and will price some pieces too high for you to sell and make a profit. But there seems to be quite a bit of employee turnover in these shops, so the next person pricing jewelry might not be as knowledgeable. After Christmas is a good time to pick up Christmas jewelry. Some shops will mark down holiday items to get rid of them, other shops just store them away for next year. I love shopping at thrift shops just like Forrest Gumps box of chocolates, you never know what youre going to get. Every trip is a treasure hunt. Some days are slim pickins, but some days are very rewarding. Just yesterday I got 10 pieces for $15 several are sterling silver, and one piece may be jade Im still not sure. Be consistent in your thrift shop shopping. Try to go out every week, and find out when the shops have their special promotions. Most of the large chain shops put out new merchandise all day long, some other shops restock on certain days. Find out when those are, and get there early.Read books about costume jewelry, and become knowledgeable, so when you shop the thrift shops youll be armed with information. Have fun with it, get to know the thrift shop staff, and youll come home with some fabulous jewelry at fabulous prices.

Gifts For Guy (Sep 19, 2011)
No one actually knows why or how the tradition of having groomsmen at weddings came about but it has become customary to have a best man plus several male guests who act on behalf of the bride and groom at the wedding. In days gone by, groomsmen actually protected the bride and groom with swords and the like which is how the guard of honor tradition began. You will still see this custom at military weddings where the groomsmen form an arch for the bride and groom to traverse.Traditionally, they show guests to their seats, guard the bride and groom and entertain single guests who have no one to converse with. For the single ladies they are also expected to keep them occupied by dancing with them etc.The groom himself chooses one of these young men to be his best man, usually his closest friend or a brother or relative, who will carry the rings and generally accompany the groom at the ceremony until the nuptials have taken place. He is usually one of the formal witnesses also. Bridesmaids, and the maid or matron of honor, do the same for the bride.Apart from these formal duties, the best man and groomsmen are also expected to throw a party for the groom some time before the wedding to celebrate, or commiserate, his final days as a bachelor. These functions are normally called a bachelor party, stag or buck party, and will be male only. Although some throw this party the night before the wedding, many have chosen to give the men time to recover by having the party several days in advance. After all, a hung over groom is not the best way to start married life! For all this attention, it has also become increasingly popular for the groom, and bride, to give these groomsmen a gift to say thank-you for all the help and attention they have received over the weeks and months leading up to the wedding.Traditionally, sets of cuff-links were given as mementos of the day. These are still available, of course, but there are many who dont have the opportunity to wear such formal pieces of jewelry these days. If you really do want to give this traditional gift, go for the engravable kind where you can either add their initials or even those of the bride and groom. Depending on the budget, these can be in gold, silver or silver-plate, or even stainless steel and make excellent keepsakes of the day. You never know, you may be giving a future heirloom that will be passed down through generations. You are not restricted to cuff-links when it comes to giving the groomsmen gifts. The varieties of gifts on offer are virtually endless, but take some time to study the individual. You also dont have to give each groomsman the identical gifts. However, giving the same gifts will alleviate any jealousy and the difference can be made by adding their own initials to the piece or pieces. If these men like to drink, give them individual shot glasses personalized with their initials. A word if warning though - make sure you get quality glass. You dont want to be remembered for all the wrong reasons!Hip flasks too make a great gift again personalized and come in many styles. One of the most superbly stylized is a round one that can be used for display as well as for practical purposed - but be aware of being politically correct. Some people may not like the idea of alcohol related gifts. This is where it pays to get to know the habits of your friends and family. The general idea is to give something small and uniquely personal and many items fit this bill. Even silver key chains, which come in many different styles and designs, would be suitable. Some have a small aperture for personal photos and can be given with a photo of the bride and groom. If these men are golfers, a sport becoming increasingly popular amongst young men, there are many golf inspired gifts on offer. Silver clocks in the shape of golf carts, club style pens on desk sets, or even silver divot key rings can be found. For those who like games, compact travel sets are available. Miniature chess or roulette wheels are a great idea to distract someone while traveling and make a refreshing change form computer style games since several people can play at the same time in a restricted area.If your groomsmen are of the corporate type, then consider giving them stylish leather goods. There are many cases or computer bags on offer and most can be personalized. Some come complete with a pilot style overnight bag as well as the computer case and are a great gift idea for any occasion. Executive style briefcases would also be a good gift as well at the laptop type briefcases so that he can work while traveling.Of course, there are all kinds of office paraphernalia that can be customized with his initials. Cardholders complete with pen sets or silver clocks show an element of style which can be appreciated on a daily basis.Another one of the more traditional gifts would be a pocket watch. Although they may look a little old-fashioned, most men would love to be able to flash this remarkably stylish time piece whether he is at work or play. Every time he looks at it he will be reminded of where and why he was given it which is really the point of giving a gift.Remember that you also dont have to break the bank by giving these gifts. After all, it is not the cost of the gift but the amount of love and appreciation you want to show. A small, well thought out token can be far more appreciated than a flashy, unsuitable gift. Naturally, if budgeting is not a problem, shop away and give your groomsmen the gift of a lifetime!

The third factor you cant forget is the payment options (Jan 01, 1970)
They want to bring the professional concept the audience, but actually they are cheats. The third factor you cant forget is the payment options. Usually most of the retailer stores offer such payment options, like paying by cash, paying by credit card. But please pay attention to that you cant get your money back whether you pay with cash or credit card if you unfortunately meet the replica sellers. But it would be safe if you buy online, if some online retailers promise that the designer bags they sold are 100% authentic, you can just pay with credit card, and once you find the bags you received are in bad quality, you can always request a refund. Last but not least, please pay attention to the size of selection.
