Liquid Metal Hazards: Dealing With Minor Mercury Spills (Sep 18, 2011)
Mercury is one of the most unique substances on Earth. The only kind of metal that is in liquid form at room temperature, it is primarily found in one household product – the thermometer. And yet, it is toxic, even if only vapors from the mercury are inhaled. Medical mercury thermometers may have slowly lost popularity because of the proliferation of digital thermometers, but other kinds of thermometers still have mercury inside the glass.Since mercury is a pretty common substance, small accidental spills of mercury may happen anytime. It is particularly true in the case of medical thermometers using mercury, as these have to be shaken and tapped to “reset” the temperature. This has led the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to issue guidelines for cleaning up small mercury spills, specifically those that come from a thermometer.Cleaning up a broken mercury thermometerHave the following items at hand:4-5 ziplock bags2-6 mils thick trash bagsProtective gloves – rubber, nitrile or latexPaper towelsSqueegee and/or cardboardEyedropperDuct tape, or shaving cream and small paint brushFlashlightPowdered sulfur (optional)Wear the protective gloves.Pick up all broken pieces of glass or other sharp objects, and place on the paper towels. Fold the paper towels and place in the ziplock bag. Secure the bag. Make sure to label the bag as directed by the local health or fire department.Locate visible mercury beads, and with the squeegee or cardboard, use slow sweeping motions to contain the mercury. Darken the room and using the flashlight at a low angle close to the floor, look for additional glistening beads of mercury sticking to the surface or in small cracks. Be sure to inspect the whole room, as mercury moves fast on hard and flat surfaces.Using the eyedropper, collect or draw up the mercury beads, and carefully squeeze it out on a damp paper towel. Place and secure in another ziplock bag, and label accordingly. After removing the larger beads, put duct tape to collect hard to see beads. An alternative would be to put shaving cream on top of the small paint brush, and dot the affected area to pick up the beads. Place duct tape and/or paint brush in another zip lock, secure and label. If powdered sulfur is available, it can be used to absorb mercury beads that are too small to see. Powdered sulfur binds mercury so it can be easily removed, suppresses mercury vapors, and makes it easier to see as sulfur changes color from yellow to brown upon contact. However, it may stain fabrics with a dark color, and can be moderately toxic when inhaled. If sulfur is unavailable, it is advised to call a contractor with monitoring equipment to screen for mercury vapors.Place the mercury beads, all materials used with the cleanup including the gloves, and other related objects into the trash bag. Secure and label the trash bag.Contact the local health or fire department, or the municipal waste authority, for proper disposal of the materials. If, for some reason, the amount of spilled mercury is more than the amount in a thermometer, isolate the contaminated area and call the local or state health and/or environmental agency. For spills greater than two tablespoons (which is already equivalent to one pound of mercury), call the National Response Center 24-hour hotline at (800) 424-8802.

A lot of people also chose to have their bed sheets made out of this soft and smooth fabric - it feels so smooth and soft to the skin and at the same time gives that cooling feeling (Jan 01, 1970)
This material feels so good next to the skin and this is probably why there are quite a lot of underwear and night-wear that are made out of 100% silk. A lot of people also chose to have their bed sheets made out of this soft and smooth fabric - it feels so smooth and soft to the skin and at the same time gives that cooling feeling. This is something is different from synthetic fabric that are trying to copy the real thing. If you choose to use synthetic fabrics for your bed sheets, you will most likely wake up feeling sticky and sweaty. This is not the case if your sheets are made from 100% silk.

Hand Surgeon: How To Choose A Good One (Sep 18, 2011)
Hand injuries happen to everyone. Getting your hands back into good working order requires finding a good surgeon. Unfortunately, most of us have never had trouble before, so how do you find a good one?The best way to find a surgeon is always to ask friends, acquaintances or family members. If anybody you know has ever needed surgical help, their recommendation is like gold. But for most of us, there's nobody to ask. If you've got to find a surgeon by yourself, here's what you should keep in mind.Experience Is Number One: The first thing to look for is experience. Have they done lots of hand surgery before? They aren't easy to work on. You need somebody who's specialized on that part of the body.Your doctor should be board certified. Board certification can be confusing for the layman, but basically here's how it works. Anyone who wants to practice any kind of plastic surgery has to be certified with the American Board of Plastic Surgery. But they should also be certified to work on each particular part of the body that they do. In other words, your surgeon should be certified to work specifically on hands. Even if they aren't certified for hands, an ABPS certification allows them to.You Need Good Communication: Another very important factor is communication. How well does the hand surgeon communicate with you? Do they bombard you with surgeon-ese jargon that you don't understand, or avoid answering your questions fully? Or, do they answer your question thoroughly in layman's terms, and make sure afterward that you understand everything?Your hand doctor should be able to paint a clear picture for you describing the results, the risks and the recovery process. They should be receptive to your questions, and it should be a big concern for them that you understand everything. They should give you a realistic idea of what you can expect from your surgery.Check out Their Chops: Finally, have a look at their portfolio. Any reputable plastic specialist will have books of before and after pictures. They may have testimonials, or may even allow you to contact former patients to ask them questions. This shows that they're confident in their work. If they're reluctant to show you their work, go to someone else.In the hands of the right doctor, your hand surgery will be a success. Getting your hands back into action will be a great relief!
