Ameren UE gave the media a tour of Taum Sauk, showing off what the company calls state of the art construction. Gone is the old dirt filled dam with a concrete lining. The new structure is made entirely of concrete, with built-in safe guards and around the clock on site monitoring. The old Taum Sauk reservoir failed in December 2005, sending nearly 1.5 billion gallons of water in to Johnson Shut-Ins State Park and nearly killing the park superintendent and his family. Ameren UE said this structure could last for 100 years. "I believe that this dam is as close to fail safe as you can get," said Mark Birk, Ameren UE's VP of Power Operations. "While you can't ever guarantee anything one hundred percent, we can guarantee that this was built with the highest safety and the highest quality." Ameren UE uses the reservoir to generate electricity during peak demand, draining the water through turbines and then pumping the water back to the top when rates are lower.
